For most of us, life has been nothing but a sequence of events that happen over time with varying results. Let’s be honest, have you ever thought to yourself, “I’m no one special, I could never make a difference in the world.” Or maybe you’ve said something like, “I don’t have what it takes to make an impact on the world.” You follow that up with reasons such as:
– I don’t have what it takes
– I’m not smart enough
– I’m not a leader
– I’m too old (or young)
Whatever the excuse, I want you to know that excuses are always available, opportunities aren’t. Take a minute right now and start thinking through the reasons you can’t make an impact in the world. Go ahead, fill in the blank below with every excuse you can come up with.
“I’m not __________ enough.”
“I’m too __________.”
Ok, now that your excuses are on the table. I want to share with you a passage of Scripture followed by a few instructions on how you can make an impact on the world! Jeremiah 1:4-10 says:
“The Lord gave me this message:
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.
Before you were born I set you apart
and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”
“O Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!”
The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!” Then the Lord reached out and touched my mouth and said,
“Look, I have put my words in your mouth!
Today I appoint you to stand up
against nations and kingdoms”
Based on this passage of Scripture, there are three things I want to point out to you to encourage you to make an IMPACT:
1. You’ve already got the job, stop with the application!
v. 5 tells us that “Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Do you understand what that means? God has set you apart and given you a purpose. Stop wasting your time with the application process, you were awarded the job to change the world!
2. Stop making excuses!
Look at Jeremiah’s excuse to the God in v.6: “O Sovereign Lord, I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” When I look back over my life, I look at incredible opportunities that were missed because of excuses that I made. God wants to use you to make a difference in the world. Stop making excuses. They’re no good.
3. You’ve got what it takes!
The Lord tells Jeremiah in v.9, “Then the Lord reached out and touched my mouth and said, “Look, I have put my words in your mouth!” Did you get the good news? You’re not responsible having the right set of tools and abilities. God needs your availability, not your ability. He will give you what you need to accomplish the purposes for which you were created!
Stop with the excuses. Strap up. Step out.
Make an impact!
