What if they really knew you?

“Stop comparing your behind the scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel.” – Pastor Steven Furtick

I’ll never forget my sophomore year in high school (2000) when Hip-Hop artist, Eminem a.k.a. Marshall Mathers released the album, The Marshall Mathers LP, which was made famous by the hit, The Real Slim Shady. While I am certainly not advocating the song, I remember the chorus well which stated:

I’m Slim Shady, yes I’m the real Shady. All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating. So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up, please stand up, please stand up?

As I sit tonight and think about the question, Will The Real (Insert Your Name) Please Stand Up?, I am curious as to who I would see? Let me explain. If I was to ask people who they thought I was, I feel like I would get a wide variety of responses. I believe some would see me as a spiritual leader. Some would see me as funny guy (to which they would be right). Some would see me as kind and gentle. Some would see me as a hypocrite. Some may say I’m too loud. Some may even see me as wise (that one may be more of my own voice). While they would all be right to an extent, they would also be very wrong about the REAL me.

Let’s be honest, if the people around you knew the REAL you, they probably wouldn’t like you. By real you, I mean the person they would see if your thought life became public knowledge.

I’m not saying all this to lead you into a serious state of depression or feelings of unworthiness. In fact, my aim is to do the opposite. One of my greatest struggles in life has been coming to the realization that God knows the REAL me and still chooses me. Why? Couldn’t He have picked someone who was less selfish? Couldn’t He have chosen someone who made fewer mistakes? Couldn’t He have chosen someone who was a better Christian? The answer to all these questions is: YES. He COULD have. But He DIDN’T. He chose you.

God is not limited by your limitations. As a matter of fact, “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” (1 Corinthians 1:27) God is in the business of turning messes into miracles so you’re the perfect candidate. The next time you begin to feel like you can’t be used by God because the REAL you is too dysfunctional and inadequate, I want you to remind yourself of the words found it Colossians 1:21-22 which says,

This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

Do you see that? The REAL you can stand before God as HOLY and BLAMELESS, WITHOUT A SINGLE FAULT when you place your faith in Christ Alone!!! 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

You have become a new person because Christ has taken residence in your life. When God looks at you now, He doesn’t see a liar, a hypocrite, a cheater, a drunk, an addict, etc., HE SEES JESUS IN YOU which is the reason we are HOLY and BLAMELESS, WITHOUT A SINGLE FAULT!
