Over the past several weeks, I have been in great anticipation awaiting the beautiful summer days. The thought of mid-80’s temperature, fresh-cut grass (that someone else will cut), blue skies, and sunshine do something good for my soul. Maybe your season is not summer. Maybe you enjoy the beautiful scenery of fall where the leaves change colors and the temperature is cooler. Maybe your season is winter. The thought of cold weather and snow and sitting by the fireplace with family and friends. Whatever the season may be, there is always a great anticipation when your season is just around the corner.
But what do you do during the seasons you don’t enjoy? Do you give up? Do you go into hibernation until your season comes? Do you live miserable until your season swings into full effect?
Here’s what I have learned about myself. I can endure the misery of winter (because I don’t like cold weather) because I know that it will only last a few months and that Spring and Summer are close by. Have you ever noticed that? Tough seasons are easier to endure when you know that a new season is quickly approaching. But here’s the reality, it’s easy to endure physical seasons because they are predictable. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way in the seasons of life. We all go through ups and downs and some seasons last longer than others. Spiritual seasons are unpredictable. According to 1 Peter 5:8, the Word tells us to “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” In other words, the enemy is always looking for a moment to put you in a bad season. So how do we endure these tough seasons?
When I am reminded of how the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour, I remind myself of Daniel 6:22 which says, “My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.” Did you see that!? I can endure the tough times because I know that in all seasons, my God is fighting for me!
So what season are you in? Have you faced an abundant amount of pain recently that never seems to go away? Do you feel like you’re in quicksand, falling slowly and helpless? Whatever season you are in, remember, seasons change! Embrace the season you are in and ask God what He is trying to teach you during this time. He is the great deliverer! No matter how much your life has been shaken, God will not be shaken, so cling to Him!
At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. – Hebrews 12:26-29
