What You Probably Never Knew About Jesus Walking On Water!

Yesterday, I attended Elevation Church as they continued the series ‘In-fin-8’ (the greatest stories ever told). The story that was preached was one that most of us are familiar with if we had spent any time at church in our lifetime. The Scripture is found in Matthew 14:22-33 with the account of Jesus walking on water. You know the typical sermon points from this Scripture:

1. We all face storms in life
2. Jesus always shows up in the middle of the storm
3. Peter lost faith when he took his eyes off Jesus
4. If we call upon the name of the Lord, he will save us immediately
5. Jesus can calm any storm

While all of these are valid and good points. I want to focus on something I had never noticed until last night. To really get a full understanding of what happened in this particular passage, I wanted to read other accounts of the passage. The passage I am referring to is found in Mark 6:45-52 which says,

Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.  And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.  And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out,  for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”  And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,  for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

Did you see that!? Jesus wasn’t planning on stopping in the middle of the storm! The Bible says “He meant to pass them by.” Another version says, “He intended to pass them by.” So why did he stop? He stopped because they cried out to him! So what about the storms we face? Will God stop for us? My thought is simple: God will stop when we cry out to him, regardless of what He intended to do!

You may be asking yourself “Where is God during this storm I’m going through?” He’s there. If you need Him, cry out. He’ll stop for you! He cares for you and loves you no matter where you are.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
    and the flame shall not consume you.
 For I am the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. – Isaiah 43:2-3
