A few months ago, I sat down to pray to seek God’s direction for my life. Being uncertain, uncomfortable, uneasy, and unstable, I was desperate for God to open a door. I picked up God’s Word and began reading several different passages. I’d heard people say just to start reading and whatever you happened to read must be what God wants you to hear. I didn’t buy into that theory. So what I decided to do was to read until I was certain God was speaking to me. I probably read through 4 books before I realized what God was trying to get through to me. In Genesis 12:1, I read,
“The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.’“
Now I understand that this may not mean much to you, but to me, it was all I needed to hear. I was stuck in a life of comfortable complacency for the majority of my life. I lived close to my family and lived in a community I was completely comfortable with. Although there is nothing wrong with these things, I was learning something new about myself. God was telling me to get out of my comfort zone. With the same command that the LORD gave Abram, God was telling me to go to a land that He would show me. Sounds simple right? Not quite. Where was the land He was supposed to be showing me? What am I going to do when I get there? When am I supposed to go? How am I going to get there? What am I going to live on?
Questions and doubts were bombarding my mind but one word stood out among the others, LEAVE. I packed my bags and began a journey that was more uncertain than the life I already had. Although the circumstances around me seemed so shakable, I was certain of one thing: GOD CANNOT BE SHAKEN. Hebrews 12:26 says,
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”
I am still in this new journey and I still have a lot of questions about the things that will come to pass in my life, but I am certain of one thing: I would never know what it’s like to walk on water if I didn’t get out of the boat. God’s faithfulness and provision in my life have been eye-opening and more importantly, life changing.
Whatever you may be going through today, just remember that God is pleased by our faith and without faith, it is impossible to please God. Sometimes you have to take steps on an invisible path. Just because you can’t see the steps doesn’t mean they are not there. God sees things we may never see.
Step up. Step out. Begin walking. Your new journey begins today…
