Have you ever felt like you’ve messed up so bad in your past that you’ll never be able to amount to anything? Or maybe you feel like God can’t use someone who has failed as many times as you? Whatever the case, I want to remind you that God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called! In other words, when we make ourselves available to God, he makes us able. I want to show you a few Biblical examples of the types of people God uses:
Jacob cheated, Peter had a temper, David had an affair, Noah got drunk, Jonah ran from God, Paul committed murder, Gideon was insecure, Miriam gossiped, Martha worried, Thomas doubted, Sara was impatient, Elijah was moody, Moses stuttered, Zacchaeus was short, Abraham was old, and Lazarus was dead.
When you feel like God can’t use you because of something you’ve done or because you don’t have the ability to do what He has called you to do, remember that God doesn’t need your ability, he simply wants your availability!
Do you remember as a kid playing with the classic “Etch A Sketch”? You know, the grey screen with the red plastic surrounding it with two white knobs on the bottom corners that allowed you to draw neat pictures on the screen. As a child, I used to draw on them quite often. I would work on my masterpiece for several minutes as I patiently waited for the final picture. The only problem was that 90% of the time, I would make a mistake that would seemingly ruin the picture. So what did I do then? The answer is simple. I shook up the “Etch A Sketch” and erased the picture so I could have a fresh start and create a new one.
I believe that God treats our lives like an Etch A Sketch. We live our lives trying to do the right thing and somewhere along the line, we fail. The reality, WE SIN. Our picture-perfect life is no longer perfect. So what does God do? He erases our sin and creates a fresh start. A new beginning. Psalm 51:1-2, 9-10 says,
Have mercy on me, O God,
because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion,
blot out the stain of my sins.
Wash me clean from my guilt.
Purify me from my sin.
Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
Maybe you’ve spent too much time lately thinking about the reasons God can’t use you. Regardless of how many excuses you’ve made, I want to remind you that God wants to use you. He is ready and willing to turn your mistake into a miracle! Are you ready to let Him?
